Looking to buy a 12ft to 14ft fishing boat any suggestions?
Hi, I am looking for a small 12ft to 14ft fishing boat (prefer Aluminum) thats some what cheap almost like a row boat with a 5hp outboard on it. I have checked craigs list and a bunch of dealers but there all like $1200 plus even if i get the boat without a motor any suggestions of a good place to get one, or a good boat in general. (companies..)

So I was browsing through the internet one day when I saw a picture of an inflatable pontoon boat that had these two chairs that swivel and I thought to myself, now that would be great to have for fishing! Not only did it have swivel seats, but it also came with oar locks, Fishing Rod holders and a motormount for gas or electric trolling motors. And the best part was, I didn’t have to break the bank to get one! Man, was I excited!
Needless to say, I placed my order right then and there and I didn’t even tell my wife about it until a week later when this big box was delivered to our house and I had to explain that it contained my dream-come-true. She being the great woman that she is, understood immediately.
I called my closest buddy, Jerry to give him the good news and see how soon we could go fishing. Turns out, he happened to have Friday off that week so we arranged to head out early Friday morning and go up to Miller’s Pond where the cutthroat and rainbow trout and blue gill were plentiful.
The beauty of my new inflatable pontoon boat was that the whole thing folded up neatly in a carrying bag and fit perfectly in the bed of my truck. When we pulled it out and carried it to the edge of the pond, we had it completely unfolded and inflated in less than ten minutes! Amazing!
I let Jerry sit in front while I shoved us off. I loved how easy and comfortable it was to row. In no time, we reached our favorite fishing hole. Jerry was the first to cast his line out with his homemade artificial lure. He knew exactly which lure to tie on because he was a natural-born fisherman and had the instincts of his ancestors to guide him.
It couldn’t have been more than five minutes passed after Jerry threw his line in, when he got a hit. Dang, he’s good! He shot up out of his seat and started reeling it in. I grabbed the net, anticipating a hefty blue gill or rainbow trout on the other end, and leaned over the side. I must have leaned too far, though, because I lost my balance and I fell head first into Miller’s Pond! While I’m treading water, Jerry’s pulling out a 10-pound largemouth bass! Later, it turns out, Jerry had broken the record for the largest catch at Miller’s Pond in over 20 years.
After his big catch and my accidental plunge into the pond, I was able to easily pull myself back into the boat. Unfortunately, we didn’t bring any towels on this trip and since the temperature was a bit on the cool side, we decided to pack up and head for home. When we got to shore, my new boat deflated in just a few minutes and quickly folded up so we could stash it in the truck and hit the road.
That evening while I was huddled in front of our fireplace, my wife brought me some hot soup and asked me if I was still happy that I bought my boat. I looked at her and said, “What are you doing next weekend?”
Trolling Lures and Towing Your Boat Makes for a Memorable Fishing Trip
No matter how often a fishing trip is taken, towing a boat down to the docks is an action that is looked at with trepidation. Bringing an expensive boat to where you are sailing off is a challenge to an ordinary driver, but taking a great fishing trip would be a good enough excuse to learn how to do so carefully and safely. First of all, check out your 4WD vehicle. Make sure that it’s fully gassed up and all the tires are filled up properly. It’s hard enough pulling into a gas station with a big vehicle; it would be impossible with a trailer and boat hitched up to it.
Check out the tires as well. It wouldn’t do to get a flat on either the vehicle or the trailer after you’ve hitched it up. Changing the tire on a fully loaded trailer or a hitched vehicle is enough to put the damper on any trip. Make sure that the trailer itself is balanced. Position the boat carefully so it won’t tip over or backwards and the center of gravity is low. Also check that the boat itself is balanced, with fuel and water tanks both equally filled so you don’t have too much trouble maneuvering the trailer.
Double check the boat to see if it’s secured well, in a minimum of two places. Use ratchet straps to make the ties secure. Check that the trailer’s connections are secure and that all the chains are attached. Make use of the surge brake on the trailer, and be sure that the reservoir is filled with brake fluid. Once you’re out and driving, make use of all the mirrors and be sure the two sides of the trailer are clear. Give an allowance when braking and don’t make abrupt steering movements. Once you get to the port, take extra care when positioning the trailer when readying the boat for launch. Have a person guiding you when you are doing this. When the boat is in the water, load on all your gear, fire up the trollling lures, set the bait, and get yourself ready to catch some fish.

Tackle and Lures – Information for the Fisherman
I live in Southern Idaho and I’m lucky to have a good selection of fishable lakes, reservoirs, streams and rivers within an hour drive of my home. I’m a veterinarian by trade, and during my days off, you can often find me fishing for trout and trying out new trout fishing lures. I’m like every other avid fisherman trying to find that trout fishing bait or piece of fishing equipment that outperforms other items I have tried.
I tend to fish alone on my days off, and I prefer fishing using a pontoon style boat over a Fishing Tube. My fishing tube works great in small protected bays when I feel like mainly Fly Fishing. I have my best success when I utilize my Inflatable Fishing boat with an electric motor. These one man boats allow you to avoid competition from larger fishing boats and let you follow schools of fish once you find them. I have equipped my boat with a small fish finder, and this set up really comes in handy for locating good fishing spots.
The inflatable fishing boat that I use is frameless, and folds up into a small carry bag. I drive a 1993 JEEP Wrangler that has very little room for bulky items, and this boat fits easily in my rig with room for the other tackle that I need. I used to have an inflatable pontoon boat with a frame, but ended up having to pull a utility trailer in order to haul this more bulky boat.
The other nice thing about the Sea Eagle pontoon boat that I use is its ease of setup. It only takes me about 5 minutes total time to be ready to go out on the water. This boat is puncture proof and weighs about 40 pounds.
The biggest drawback to these inflatable fishing boats is controlling them under windy conditions. In fact, if a wind starts blowing I get off the water! They do sit fairly high in the water, and the small electric motor I use is no match for a stiff breeze. I’ve personally been blown clear across the reservoir I frequent the most, and had to walk or beg a ride back around to the other side when the wind didn’t let up. A second drawback is if you enjoy fishing with a friend. These are one man rigs, and your buddy will need his own!
Other than the wind issue, these types of boats are excellent for trolling with trout fishing lures, or anchoring and dropping trout fishing bait to the bottom. They also work well on small rivers when you feel like drift fishing. The Sea Eagle boat that I own can currently be purchased with most of the bells and whistles for under $900 including the trolling motor. When compared to the cost of a full sized boat and trailer, they are a bargain.

I am thinking the same way your are. I love bass fishing but i am not loaded with money. I was at Richards sporting goods and they have a Pelican Bass Hunter 8 ft i think for $549. It would be perfect to put a trolling motor on and it only weighs 80 pounds so you can drag or carry it. It has a few seats and only goes a few inches into the water and will not tip. I think i will get this boat. Good Luck!!!

hi so far i am looking at the sevylor fish hunter 360 (12ft model) , the intex seahawk II , and the intex excursion 5. i dont have a lot of money nor the room to store a REAL boat so ive narrowed my search down to these three (unless somebody has a better suggestion that is). i will be fishing a local lake maybe once a month. it’ll have to support up to 4 adults at times ( 5’8-6ft 170-200lb-ish dudes) i plan to add a ply wood floor with a layer of foam and outdoor carpet, and a 30-36 thrust minn kota trolling motor. any opinions on which boat / raft to go with will be greatly appreciated. i am already thinking i might need to haul a small el cheapo walmart raft on the side to hold the ice chest and some grear.

While sailors have been using marine GPS for years now, fishermen (and women) are starting to rely on marine GPS units that are specialized for finding fish or Fishfinder (also fish finder) GPS.
Basic marine GPS units are manufactured by several companies – Humminbird (common misspellings are Humming Bird and Hummingbird) Fishfinder GPS, Eagle Fishfinder GPS, Garmin, Lowrance Fishfinder, Eagle Fishfinder, and NorCross HawkEye Fish Finder. As you can see the number of manufacturers for fish finder GPS is very small and the leader, based on the number of products and popularity of products based on user feedback on sites like Amazon is Humminbird (there is no ‘g’ in their name) and Garmin.
Like most portable GPS units, fishfinders by and large are portable however many do include mounting brackets for your boat. The standard duel beam wide and narrow scan transducer issued with the unit provides enhanced performance with the duel scan feature of the Garmin 140 fish finder particularly useful when used in shallow water. Mounting the transducer is a cinch and can be installed to a number of places including inside the hull, on the transom or even on a trolling motor but care needs to be taken to ensure that it remains below water level while planing so that air bubbles don’t adversely effect the information.

Transducer – If you intend to fish in lakes and shallow water use a single frequency transducer. For open ocean or deeper situations a dual frequency or beam is a better choice.
Resolution – Get the highest resolution you can afford in color. Indoors the difference in resolution isn’t apparent. In the field the higher resolution screens will definitely make your fishing experience a good one.
Screen size – As with resolution, bigger the better. Especially for open ocean situations where you need to use split screen functions.

Speed- It is not recommended to use your portable fishfinder at high speeds. In general, high speeds will stress the unit and possibly break it. At high speeds it is best to pull it out of the water and then put it back in while moving at about 1-2 mph to help you scan the bottom of the water.
The Display- Since most portable fishfinders are not as effective at great depths, they are used mostly in shallow freshwater. They can be used in shallow saltwater as well, but that is not as common. So what do you look for on the fishfinder screen? Look for depth, water temperature and bottom structures. Look for drop offs, weed beds, rocks, fallen logs, sand, mud and any sort of transitions. These are areas where fish like to hide.

Fishing from a motor boat or rowboat is an exciting activity
Boat fishing is an exciting activity that sometimes requires an adventurer spirit in order to get the best catch. Ranging from the stability of sliding-seats rowboats, to the powerful motor board, fishing on ponds, rivers and lakes can become an unforgettable experience.
Because lakes are fed by creeks, rivers, and springs, it depends on the water stream when selecting between a rowboat and a motor boat. Ponds are best for rowing, because most of them are the result of rain runoff or modest springs, without the irregular shorelines of lakes that require more boating skills. Some ponds are fed by small streams, allowing the best catch and the pleasure of traditional fishing. Motor boats are more appreciated in lakes but particularly in rivers, although the selection is more often oriented to accessibility to certain areas when seeking the best catch. People who live near a body of water can enjoy practicing shore fishing, but most people fish from lakes and ponds, often requiring a boat.
Boat rentals are available in many national parks and other recreational fishing locations, including canoes, kayaks, motor boats and rowboats designed to be powered by oars. In fact, traditional boats had the oarlocks mounted on the gunwales, recalling rowing boats of ancient times; particularly those used during wars and known as galleys, often powered by slave paddlers. Actually, rowboats with gunwale-mounted oarlocks can be found, but they tend to be wide to get enough spread between the oarlocks using long oars. Another type of boats is called shells, usually with motors or pedals but also rowing can be the only propulsion. Shells often have sliding seats, to add leg power to the stroke.
When selecting a boat, one of the most important factors is the size, not too large or too small, at the point to limit the owner. If fishing is a quiet activity, the size of the catch may require space to move, including the gear needed during the activity, but you do not want too much space. If you are unsure of the size of the boat, the rental services can help you out.
At the rental you will be asked what you need the boat for and how many people will be aboard, and if you are going to get help from them, to determine if you will need a rowboat or a motor boat. Depending on how old, big and strong you are, in addition to the water you have chosen, the choice of the right boat can be different of your original expectations, when you are new to fishing.

What is the Best Time of Year?
Since I am not considering any particular location, as a general rule of thumb I would have to say spring and fall. Now that doesn’t mean if you are fishing in the winter or summer that the surf fishing will be poor. It most likely just won’t be outstanding. That being said, it doesn’t mean the fishing will be outstanding in the spring and fall. What it does mean is that given the same set of circumstances, the fishing will probably be better in the spring and fall. Surf fishing depending on your location can be good year round. If you know what you’re doing it isn’t difficult to catch fish in the surf year round.
What is the Best Time of Day?
This question is easier to answer. In the early morning just before dawn until 9 or 10 AM and in the evening an hour or two before dusk. This follows the nocturnal feeding habits of the fish. During the summer when a lot of the beaches are occupied by sunbathers, dusk might be your best bet after they have left the beach. In some areas the rule is no fishing in swimming areas from the time lifeguards go on duty until the time they go off.
What is the Best Tide Time?
It’s no secret that the tides affect surf fishing. Moving water at the surf line is good for fishing. High tide is best because it’s easier to cast out and reach the deeper water. The window of opportunity is two hours before high tide and two hours after. Slack tide which is right between high tide and low tide is not productive for surf fishing. Low tide in most areas is usually only good for scouting the beach for ideal fishing spots.
What are the Best Moon Phases?
The moon not only plays a part in the tidal movements, it also affects the fishing. Let me explain. The moon produces the most extreme tide changes, referred to as spring tides, during the new moon and the full moon. The water moves faster during the change in tides from high to low tide and the total change in depth is the greatest. This is the best time to fish the surf. Also, common belief is that during a full moon the fish feed most of the night.
What are the Best Weather Conditions?
Weather conditions are a little more difficult to address because of all the different kinds of weather factors. An onshore breeze if it isn’t too strong is a plus. Cold fronts are negative factors. High wind and surf is also bad. High winds make it difficult to fish and the water clarity is very poor. Low pressure is better than high pressure during a spring tide. When the weather conditions have been poor for the last 24 hours the fishing won’t improve until the fish have had a chance to acclimate. Sometimes it may take a day or two depending on how severe the weather has been.
Now after considering all the best times for surf fishing, it’s easy to understand how these situations can work together when they occur at the same time. When planning to go surf fishing try to take advantage of the time when several of these conditions overlap each other.
Seven Quick Steps to Start Surf Fishing Right Away
If you’ve never surf fished before this article is written for you. My goal is to provide you with a very simple, easy to follow method so you will catch your first fish in the surf. That’s all I want you to be able to do. Just catch a fish, any fish. I don’t care if you have never caught a fish in your life. I want you to see how exciting and easy it is to do. After that I guarantee you’ll be hooked and I will have accomplished my goal. Once you catch your first fish you’ll have the confidence I want you to get. At that point you will have the incentive to learn everything you can about this sport and enjoy many successful hours at the surf line.
Surf fishing is a neglected sport. You don’t hear much about it. The ironic thing is that it’s probably the the easiest to do and the most exciting. How strange is that?
Okay let’s get started.
Get A Surf Rod And Reel Combo
I want you to go down to Walmart or one of the big sporting good chains. You have go to one of them within range of the coastline otherwise they won’t carry any surf gear. Your budget for a surf rod and reel combo is under $69. You can probably find something for around $49. (A combo is a rod & reel combination)
Pick out any spinning surf rod and reel combo that strikes your fancy. Surf rods are heavier and longer than regular salt water rods. Get something at least 10′ but not longer than 12′ If you can find the Daiwa combo or the Shakespeare combo that’s great. Otherwise most any surf combo will do. Remember this is a beginners intro. Once you get into it you’ll probably want to get more professional gear.
Get The Minimum Required Tackle
This is going to a very short, simple list.
300 yds. of mono filament line 20 lb. Test (if your combo didn’t come spooled with line) 2 or maybe 3 Pyramid sinkers 3oz. weight 1 pkg. of 2/0 circle hooks ( Look at the ready made leaders with hooks on them so you can see how their set up) 1 pkg. of #2 snap swivels
Get Your Gear Set Up
Okay now spool the line on your reel and don’t wind it on too loosely. Wind your line on through a piece of Styrofoam or anything that will put a little drag on it as fills up your reel. We’re not going to deal with a shock leader at this stage. You probably won’t be casting that hard anyway. If you don’t know what a shock leader is don’t worry about it. You can find when you need to know or just look it up. That’s too much to get into at this stage.
With the hook and sinker you can go one of two ways. Either one will get the job done at this point.
Method #1
Make a short 12″ leader for the hook and tie it on your line about 18″ from the end of your line (Remember you saw hooks with leaders at the tackle store). Tie a snap swivel on the end of your line and attach the pyramid sinker to it..
Method #2
Attach a #2 snap swivel to a pyramid sinker and slide in on your line so that it can slide freely. Attach another #2 snap swivel to the end of your line and attach a leader to it with a 2/0 hook on it.
That’s it your surf rig is ready to go.
Learn To Cast
Pick an appropriate location like a park or ball field where there won’t be any people around. You can tape off the hook for safety so you won’t have to take it off. Now I want you to practice casting until you can cast with a basic amount of control for direction and distance. This isn’t a bad idea even if you have some experience. Practice until you can cast 100′ to 200′ with a reasonable amount of predictability. If you can do better that’s great. If you try to cast much further you will need to learn and use a shock leader.
Why You Need To Know About Tides
I need to give you a quick lesson on tides and surf fishing. Find the tide tables for your location. I’ll give you three possibilities. Find them on the Internet, look for them in the local coastal newspaper or ask at the local bait and tackle shop.
Find out when you can go to the beach at low tide. Visit the beach and look for variations in the bottom. Note spots for pockets and changes in the formation of the bottom, basically where you can cast into deeper water or past a sandbar. If you can spot a rip through a sandbar so much the better. These will be your target spots to fish.
Pick The Right Time To Fish The Surf
Okay now you know where you are going to fish and the water you will be targeting. Go back to the the tide charts. Find a time when high tide occurs in the early daylight hours or around early dusk. It doesn’t matter which one you pick. You are going to fish a two hour window before and after high tide which will be four hours of fishing time. Now you know when to go fishing.
Get Some Bait
Now it’s time to start fishing. Head over to the local bait shop. Buy a dozen 3″ – 4″ shrimp. (Get a Fishing License if you need one.) Head for the surf and get your gear out. Hook one of the shrimp through the tail about an inch from the end. Cast into the designated spots, get in a comfortable chair and hold on. If something doesn’t happen in 20 to 30 minutes cast into one of the other areas that you scouted at low tide.
From the information I’ve given you, at this level of skill you have the best opportunity of landing something very exciting. There’s a good chance you will use all of your bait catching fish. Any size, any kind just catch something so you can see what it’s like. Plan on releasing anything you catch for now. You can get into keeping some at another time.
It’s not foolproof but it will be highly effective. There’s a strong likely hood you will catch something your first time out. Don’t worry about the possibility that the fish aren’t out there. They are there, just take my word for it.
How The Weather And Moon Really Impact Fishing
Let’s start with the barometer. The barometer is a very effective tool for measuring the feeding behavior of fish. The barometer is an instrument used to measure ambient atmospheric pressure. Don’t worry, I’m going to simplify it for you and cut through all of the scientific jargon so we can get to what really matters, catching fish. The measure of barometric atmospheric pressure can then be used to help predict the weather and more importantly for our purposes, the feeding behavior of fish. Haven’t we all wondered why fish were so easy to catch yesterday, but today you can’t even get a bite?
You see when a low pressure front is building, I’m sure you’ve all heard this term on the weather channel, the barometer is low and dropping and a storm is either present or on its way. When the barometer is high or rising, the weather is fair and dry. If you’re watching the weather on the TV, that’s what the large capital L or H means on the weather map. The L stands for a low pressure system and the H stands for a high pressure system.
So what does this mean to me as a fisherman? Let me explain. The barometer is a very useful tool that will unlock many of the “mysteries” of fishing. You say, “Come on Trevor, is this really true?” The answer is yes, it is true. When the atmospheric pressure fluctuates, it affects the air bladders in fish. You may know that almost all saltwater fishermen check the tides before they head out fishing. And it’s a great strategy because the tides impact fishing. But you do realize what causes the tides to change, don’t you? That’s right, the moon. And the gravitational pull of the moon that impacts the changing tides is also pushing against some part of the earth all the time. So the pressure is always there but since water is more easily moved than the ground, water is lifted up towards the moon causing the tides to change. How high the high tide will rise or how low the low tide may go is largely determined by the position of the moon and sun.
Knowing and understanding this information isn’t just important to the saltwater angler though. Freshwater anglers don’t deal with tides like saltwater anglers, but the phases of the moon are very important to them as well. What the angler wants to focus on are the new moon and full moon periods on the calendar. The two or three days following these two occurrences will result in more fish activity. It’s that simple.

Surf fishing at the beach on the ocean can get real exciting. In this article I will outline surf fishing tips I have learned through the years that anyone can use. Some tips have been acquired through personal experience and from other successful surf fishing friends.
First you need to make sure you have the adequate equipment. A Fishing Rod that is between 10 feet and 15 feet long is the ideal length in order to achieve good casting distance and leverage. The fishing reel can be a spinning reel size 6000 up to an 8000 size with a good drag system and good line capacity for heavier line such as 17 to 25 pound test. One thing to remember about fishing in the ocean, you never know what you will catch, so you need to be prepared with the proper heavy equipment to handle a 30 pound sting ray or a large blue fish that have giant teeth, not to mention the occasional shark. Sometimes you will catch small fish like whiting or lady fish that are too small for a heavy rod, but being prepared for the big one is really what you want.
Choosing where to fish is another choice to be made. If you are at a home or condo on the ocean front you would most likely fish right out front. Then look for activity on top of the water, like birds diving into the water feeding on bait fish. Where there are small fish there are big fish not too far away. Fish close to them if you can, otherwise get out your polarized sunglasses and look for bait fish near where you are standing. If you don’t see any, just cast out to where the waves break and let your bait float in the sandy trenches the waves create. That is where fish will look for food.
Always look at the tide chart for your area and pick your fishing times around high tides. The best time is usually 2 hours before and one to two hours after high tide. Surf fishing at these times can usually yield the most activity. Also try early morning and early evening which is normally a good fishing time. Coupled with high tide, this time frame can be very exciting and productive.
Other Fishing Gear you need will be a 5 gallon bucket to carry your bait, drinking water, towel, knife, cutting board for cutting up clams etc and rod stand. Plus you may want another carry all for everything mentioned after you put some fish in the bucket for cleaning later. You should also consider using a steel leader and a good hook rig such as a pompano rig or a strong steel hook attached to the steel leader. For sinkers you can use the pyramid style or the sputnik style. I use the sputnik style because it sticks in the sand and allows the bait to float in the water. The weight of the sinker or weight depends on how rough the surf is. The pyramid style can tend to roll with the surf and back to shore again.
Surf fishing tips like these can help you get started fishing the surf. Always check out the local bait shops to buy bait and ask what’s been biting lately, then gear up accordingly.
Tides – Influence on Fish Feeding
The feeding cycle of some fish is directly influenced by tidal movements. In most parts of the world fish that cling to coastal areas feed mainly on the flood tide when smaller organisms are washed in with warmer water in winter and with colder water in summer. There are times when fish feed on the tail end of the ebb tide and the start of the flood tide. This would account for the variation in a fish species’ diet from one area to another at different times. What may seem indicative of a certain species’ feeding habits in one location, may not be the same at another location just a short distance away.
When smaller organisms and small fish are washed in with a rising tide, bigger fish will follow and feed on them, leaving again when the food source runs out. Dusk and dawn are another of the variables. Large numbers of marine organisms, which the surface fish feed on, move up from the depths at night when the surface water cools. They migrate back to the depths as the sun rises, away from the warmer upper layers and the sun’s rays.
Locality also dictates behaviour, not all places in the world have two tides, such as New Guinea. There are places that have one tide higher than the other and other places with mixed tides, sometimes several a day. With the moon exactly over the equator, these places have two tides of equal height and as the angle of the moon to the equator increases, the second tide disappears.
The feeding behaviour and habits of fish which depend on tides vary as much as the tides vary. There is some thought that the variations of the tidal flow confuse the fish. This is not so, if the food rides in with the tide, so will the fish. Uncertain tides may not fool the fish, but they certainly fool the angler. A truly tidal feeding species will feed at irregular intervals, due to the variance of tides and indeed, many fish can go for long periods of time without feeding at all.
An estuary with a rising tide is good news for fish, with organisms washing in from outside the estuary. So just after high tide, many fish move in from the ocean and from the upstream areas to feed in the estuaries on all the fresh organisms.
Currents within the ocean are just as important, especially the vertical and inclined currents which firstly carry cooler water up from the depths to the surface and divert warmer water to the cooler levels and secondly, they bring vast numbers of organisms to the continental shelf where fish can feed on them.
Surface currents are affected by wind and surges, whereas vertical currents react to temperature and salinity. Fish use these vertical currents as birds do the wind currents, rising and navigating to different depths during their migrations. Without these currents which carry plankton and other organisms, fish may not be so abundant around our coastal areas.
The importance of the upwelling currents bringing cooler water to the top and moving warmer water away also negates the need for temperature sensitive fish to remain within their temperature tolerance by following the water away from the coast and away from their natural feeding grounds.

Believe it or not, there are some that were not deterred by the movie Jaws and they choose to seek out sharks instead of run from them. If you are so bold as to take on shark fishing, you should understand some basics before hitting the open sea.
If your goal is to actually catch a shark, the best time to do it is in June. The temperature is not too hot and it will attract more of the predators you seek. If you decide to fish for sharks in the middle of the summer, you should be aware of water temperatures and try to find the coolest spot possible.
When you plan a shark-fishing trip, you need to be prepared. Many people would advise keeping a checklist beforehand in order to help you with preparation. Some things that you should include when packing for your trip are chum and proper gear. Your rods and reels should be able to handle a three hundred fish or greater. Typically, you should plan to fish with three to five baits in the water at a time. Therefore, you will need many rod and reel setups to accompany the ratio of bait.
The best rod to use is a fifty to eighty pound class rod. You should not forget your harness and safety straps (you do not want to fall overboard and become live bait). In addition, you want to remember your bait and chum. Running chum is the most effective way to trap a shark so be prepared for a mess onboard.
It is important to know what species of shark you are wanting to fish. Different sharks swim at different levels and temperatures. In order to set a shark trap, you will have to tie your farthest bait off the bow rail with a flat line clip. Make sure that the line is out of the way and stay in the highest rocket holder on the particular side of the boat from which you are fishing. You should attach your bait, attach a weight or balloon on the line, and plunge it approximately eighty feet. The second rod’s bait is set down sixty feet while resting in the trolling holder; this line is also attached to the midship with a rubber band. The third line is set down thirty feet with no balloon but rather free bait. You should make sure that your drags are loose so that you will be alerted early by the clicking sound of the reel. If you color code your balloons, it will be easier to tell which rod is being pulled.
Once you have waited and finally caught your shark, be prepared. Sharks will have different temperaments and act according to their agitation. Some sharks have been known to slightly drag the bait before they swallow, while other sharks will run at the boat, run in the opposing direction from the boat, or come right up to the boat. If you need a harness, make sure that the harness is safely attached to the boat and the reel.
Once you have the shark close to the boat, your experienced sidekick will be able to help. You will want to hand wire the shark into the boat. Hand wires are meant to be sturdy and they will not break if you are attached to them. Do not wrap the wire around your hand because you want to be able to let go of the wire easily if you have to. If you are keeping a shark, you will need to gaff and rope it by its tail.
Remember that you should only keep a shark if you have plans to eat it, use it in a tournament or if you believe it is a contender for the world record. You can take a picture with the shark without killing it.

What Do you Do When your Engine or Outboard Motor Stops or Won’t Start Up?
You are out for a nice day of fishing or boating, and your engine stops. Wouldn’t you like to know how to fix the problem, or not have to call a mechanic? After you have checked to the gas gauge and the battery and discovered that they are not the cause of the problem, there are a few more places to check:
Did your engine overheat? Check to see if something is blocking the water intake. If so, remove it and give the engine time to cool down before restarting it.
Are the spark plug wires cracked? These can short out when there is too much moisture in the air. If these are cracked, cover all of the wires with duct tape. This will keep the moisture out, and prevent further damage to the cables.
Did the water or fuel hose break or slip off. If the spare hose you have is too small, place one end in boiling water to stretch it over the fitting. If the spare is too big, cut it lengthwise, and fit it inside the other hose making the opening smaller.
Is the oil gasket leaking? If you are pumping oil through a leaky gasket, and don’t have a spare, you can use your marine chart. Trace the old gasket on the chart and cut it out. You may use more chart for desired thickness.
Because you never know when something can give out, or go wrong; you should always carry spare parts with you on the boat. Some quick fix-it parts that may come in handy are: small tools, duct tape, light bulbs, batteries, hose, gaskets and a one-size-fits-all drive belt.

But buying the right Fish-Finder for you, and the type of fishing you will be doing whether it is a hand-held model or an H.D.S.-7. Has anyone tried these Sevylor fishing rafts on a river? I am considering buying one – they are really inexpensive relative to other boats but they have been around for quite a while and seem to have mostly positive reviews. I’m am just wondering if I should buy one of these or if I should buy a one man fishing pontoon. I would like to be able to have a friend or two come along with me from time to time but mostly just fishing smaller slow – medium moving rivers in Montana. If anyone owns one of these and has tried it please let me know ASAP if it is worth the investment. Thanks!!!

I was going to get the 8 footer but I want some more room, I don’t plan on using it in white water but I am going to use it on a river that has a few mild rapids that I have floated on inner tubes before so I imagine it should be ok.
If your goin’ ta’ use her on rivers, what size/length is it (might want ta’ add details)? Sevylor are pretty decent and at the price one can’t really go wrong. Had an 11′ 3″ Intex Seahawk which we used on lakes, ponds and rivers (not whitewater type) and she did us right. Had a’ Motor Guide 30lb., thrust electric trollin’ motor w/ Sevylor mounts on her which made the lakes and ponds even better. The Cape is well known for striped bass and is definitely one of the best locations to fish to striped bass. Race Point off of Provincetown is world famous for sport fishing. And there are many great charter boat captains on the Cape. We filmed a great striped bass and bluefish show called Fishguts, with Ed McDonough, Al Howard and Capt Rich Schelle onboard The Schelfish out of Plymouth. Many of the shows were from Race Point as well as Plymouth.
Another fantastic location to fish for stripers is Billingsgate Shoals off of Wellfleet. It seems on most days when you go for striped bass you will catch fish as long as you pay attention to the feed. This year looks to be a great year.
Stripers must be at least 28 inches to keep, and you can only keep two stripers of that size or larger per angler.
Another great spot for striped bass fishing in Cape Cod Bay is known as The Fingers. The Fingers can be a very lucrative spot in mid summer during the midnight tides. I prefer the black Fishguts Chum Tube Eel trolled at a slow speed of 2kts using lead core line. We have caught several fish over 40lbs in the area.
There are a number of ways to fish for Bass. You can cast bucktails, rubber eels, kastmasters or hopkins lures. The retrieve should be very slow. Of course the speed should be varied if you do not get any hits. An angler can also bottom fish for stripers. By that I mean he/she can use mackerel chunks and cast a weighted line out off the beach, pier or boat and let it sit on the bottom. Some fisherman prefer a float to keep your bait off the bottom and away from the crabs that will otherwise eat it.
Chumming also works very well with striped bass fishing in Cape Cod Bay. Chumming is done by setting out a chum slick of clams, pogie oil, mackerel chunks etc.. This can be expensive but it works. Remember not to over chum. Entice to fish to that boat but do not over feed them. After the chum slick is started, throw a live eel or float a fresh piece of bait similar to what your slick is and let it drift out with you chum. It shouldn’t take that long before you’re hooked up. Some anglers swear by live eels and they do work well. There have been many books written on this quarry. I could go on and on about striped bass fishing but I can only give some of the pointers in this article.
My final tip is that the only way to catch a bass is to get out there and give it a try. You can catch striped bass from the beach, fishing piers, jetties and boats. And don’t forget to get children involved in sporfishing. It gives them lasting memories and is an excellent alternative to drug abuse. Cod is one of the most sought after fish in fishing season and is available surfing near the shore. And, the best season to catch mature cod is in winters. It’s for sure that fishing is a great holiday adventure but do you know How to Fish for Cod? And, if you do not know, it’s better if you learn how to fish for cod and then step onto the adventure pad.
Initially you need to know when and at what time cods are available near shores. The best season to catch cod fish is cold winter and especially when tide is fast and high. This is the right time when sea is full of food and you can catch ample of them near shore and especially during nights. Next on the ladder is the kind of rods, tackles and net that has to be used in catching Cod/codling. Cods are real heavy fishes so make sure that you have a good rig and heavy cast so that you can pull at them with ease. It would be better if you keep extra rigs ready with bait since cods hunt for food in groups of 5-6 and as soon as cod hits the surf you may have enough chance to get two or three of them in a go. Make sure that your cast can go as deep as 6oz sinker and bait up to 100 yards.
The best way of learning How to fish for Cod is by practicing on a lonely beach since during full season, beaches are bustling with fishing and you, being novice won’t be able to keep the grounds. You can take 18-20 foot beach caster for practicing cod fishing. One of the most important aspects that you should keep in mind regarding fish line is that it should be around 35-40lb as cods are heavy fishes. Choose the spot from where you are going to do fishing and then mark the ground with tripod. After that walk 50-60 yards up the tide and the distance may vary in accordance with the speed of the tide and wind. Don’t give jerks when hook gets cod into it as tidal waves may rip the hook from line. When you feel that cod has hit the surf loosen the clutch of fish rod a little.
Now, the basic points need to be considered when you have leant how to fish for cod includes: o Never tread into deeper zones into the sea all alone. It would be advisable to take an experienced angler along even when you have already learned how to fish for cod. o Carry along means of communication so that you may call for help in the event of an emergency. o Prepare a checklist of the angling/cod fishing tools and equipments that you are required to carry. o Don’t fish in rough tides or heavy seas as it can be dangerous for your life. Wait for the tide to calm down.
At this time of the year, a mixture of cod, pollack, ling, blackfish, and occasional big flounder can be found here. Since there was a very weak current, we elected to drift rather than anchor.We had two rods baited with fresh skimmer clams, and two rods were rigged up with 8 ounce jigs and teasers. All were sent down in the 60 foot water depth as we drifted over some nice structure. Nothing much happened, so we set up for another drift. This time, the two jig rods got hit on the way down. After a spirited battle, an undersized cod came up, followed by a nicer keeper sized fish. Several more drifts produced nine keeper sized cod, so we headed to a very sticky piece of bottom nearby in the hopes of bagging a few blackfish or maybe some ling. We anchored on the spot and after weeding through the onslaught of bergalls finally got a nice little blackfish bite going, with a nice mess of ling in the mix.
Although bottom fishing at Block Island is a still a shadow of its former self, it still has its moments. The productive bottom holds cod, pollack, ling and blackfish in reasonably decent numbers from mid- March through most of May. Once the big fluke and striped bass show up, this fishing tends to thin out as the hordes of dogfish begin to make their presence known. The nice thing about fishing here is that you can target several different type of fish in the same general area.
I generally start out a trip looking for cod. You can find the fish in water as shallow as 50 feet and as deep as 150 feet. I have found that if there is still some forage as mackerel or herring in the water, it is more effective to use metal jigs than clam baits. Any of the popular jigs that imitate a mackerel or a herring will work. I like to use a combo rig consisting of a cod jig on the mainline with a teaser rigged some 15 inches ahead of the jig. I use a 6/0 Sproat type hook connected to the main line via a dropper loop. I add a plastic skirt to the hook and it is finished off with a jelly worm or grub. You send the whole thing to the bottom, crank in a couple of turns, and vigorously jig the rig up and down. Sometimes the fish will hit on the upswing, and other times they will grab it on the way down. If there are any pollack in the area, they can’t resist this rig.
At times the cod will only take clam bait. The standard two hook bottom rig is most effective . One 6/0 Sproat hook is attached to the main line about a foot above the sinker, and a second hook is attached a foot above that hook. If there are some ling in the area, you can switch the hook down to a 4/0 size since the mouth of the ling is much smaller than the cod. It seems that the numbers of ling are definitely on the upswing, as more and more of these tasty bottom dwellers are appearing in the catches.
Also found in this mix is the blackfish. Although they are not found in the same numbers as the fall, there are enough of them around to make a nice day, especially when they are mixed with some cod and ling. The standard Virginia type hook, around a #4 or #3 will work fine. If there are any big flounders around, they will succumb to a #4 or #5 Virginia hook as well.
Among some of my favorite spots around Block Island at this time of the year includes the Appletree Grounds which is a series of obstructions that can be found about three miles south of the Island. The water depth can range from 90 to 100 feet and both cod and blackfish can be found here. Another great spot is called the Gateway area, and lies about four miles southeast of Block Island. The water depth is around 130 feet here and both cod and an occasional pollack can be found here.
When looking for flounder and blackfish, I tend to favor some of the more shallow water spots that lie in 40 to 50 feet of water right off the southwest corner of the Island. You can catch both species on the same anchor drop. Look for the high pieces and set up on that for the blackfish.If that doesn’t produce, let out enough anchor line so that you are just on the edge. Put down a chum pot or crack some whole skimmer clams if the tide isn’t screaming. There are almost always a couple of big flounder hanging around the edges. Sometimes there are little pods of small pollack that show up on these spots as well,

Santa Ana River lakes is a big bowl with no structure in it for fish to hang around at. The bubble hole is about the only thing that attracts and keeps fish around it that a person in a boat could have advantage in bait fishing for whatever is the heaviest planted fish that week. Some trollers have had luck trolling from the northeast corner to the southwest corner, using rapalas.
