The last few years have seen more and more being written about keeping discus fish than most other fish species. Anyone who is thinking about keeping discus fish in their home aquarium should of course get all the information they need before actually buying any of them. They are thought of as royal fish, they are native to the warm and calm Amazon waters that charm through their behavior. Keeping discus fish does require a bit of knowledge on their background, about what to offer to make such pets happy and also what to expect from them. Discus fish are considered fish of changing habits that manifest personality.
When first keeping discus fish you will find that they are shy and very calm in general, but when they start making couples they can often become a little bit aggressive due to breeding territory protection. Keeping discus fish will bring lots of rewards but it will also give you a few challenges as well. First off, as you will see with most groups of any type of fish, within a group it is not uncommon that the weakest discus will get bullied; this is something that can unfortunately result in death. Keeping discus fish in groups in a minimum of six individuals is thought of as ideal. By doing this you will increase the confidence of the group members and you lower the risk of group misbehavior.
When you are keeping discus fish, you will have to respect their habits. For example mating are matters of their own personal choice do not try to force two together. Therefore if you do plan to breed your discus as said you cannot match make and expect them to breed, you will have to let them choose their own partner. When you are keeping discus fish that are about to go through the breeding process it is always best to separate them into a different tank specially prepared for the purpose. If you are keeping discus fish that are about to breed together with the rest of your aquatic pets, you will run the risk of having some violent behavior due to the territorial claims of the breeding pair. Discus fish prepare their area that they are going to use to have their babies by cleaning it first and defending it throughout the whole process.
You will find that discus feed their young by secreting food for them from in between their scales. After about a week the fry will be big enough for you to help with the feeding by giving some baby brine shrimp or even just some flaked food will do. When you are certain that the fry have stopped feeding from the parents it will be safe for you to remove them from the tank into their own. Use a separate tank for the fry feed them well to support the accelerated growth rate. If everything has been done correctly they should grow well and at around 12 weeks they should have grown to about the 2 inch diameter mark. At that size you will be able to start to sell your baby discus fish.

Spoons are great trolling fishing lures for several reasons. For starters, they are cheap. This means that you will be saving lots of money compared to the costs of other lures out there. When it comes to Saltwater Fishing, there are a lot of lures out there that cost over five dollars. There are a few expensive lures out there that cost even more. Sometimes, fishing lures for the ocean cost over ten dollars.
Spoons are also great for trolling because they emit a great deal of reflections. Every time one of these lures reflects light, it also shines throughout the water. This shining nature also attracts the attention of many fish. When trolling, most fishermen use a down rigger to keep the spoon at a deeper depth. The great thing about doing this is that the device that keeps the spoon down also reflects light and is often bigger than the spoon. A bigger reflection or shine in the water is more likely to attract fish that are farther away. Spoons are also great lures for mackerel trolling because they are very durable. Unlike many rapalas and fish like lures out there, a spoon will not chip or break as easily.
How to Fish With Plugs
Plugs are wooden, plastic or metal lures designed to imitate the prey of predatory fish. There are now four basic types of plugs: floating divers, floaters, slow sinkers and suspenders. It is important to match the lure to the quarry and take note of the conditions, too.
Floating Diver Plugs An old, established and well-known example of a floating diver plug is the Big S, which comes in a wide range of sizes. These lures carry a diving vane on the front, creating the dive effect when they are wound in: the faster the retrieve the deeper the dive. By altering the vane angle, the steepness of dive can be controlled. A small, steeply angled lip on the plug indicates that it is a shallow diver, and a deep-running bait will have a quite shallow-angled lip. A useful feature of this type of plug is that once you have submerged it with a sharp pull, say to 2 ft (60 cm) below the surface, a steady, constant retrieve will keep it at that depth, which is very useful for searching shallow, weedy areas.
Plugs with the ability to run at a set level at a controlled speed are the ones to select when you are searching a large water by trolling – towing the lure behind a slow-moving boat. Many plugs are now made in hollow plastic, and the body cavity tilled with multi-reflective surfaces to mimic silver fish scales. They are also filled with ball bearings so that they rattle, increasing the sound attraction. A further refinement in the floating diver category is jointed plugs, which have two body sections that can move independently, increasing even further the action and disturbance as they are brought through the water.
The Rapala is one of a family known as minnow plugs, which are all successful lures. Drifting a floating minnow plug downstream can help you fish at a further distance than you could probably cast with a light lure. Probably the best known is the Devon minnow, which is a finned, revolving variant well loved by salmon anglers.
All kinds of weird and wonderful designs are available, to imitate almost every animal, insect or reptile. Some of these are ideal for chub fishing as well as for pike. With these surface lures, a very erratic retrieve -stopping and starting in a jerky fashion to make them pop on to the water – can produce spectacular takes.
Another exciting surface presentation that produces vicious attacks is possible with an adaptation of the standard surface plug, which includes a small propeller at the front end, so that it actually buzzes when pulled at a high speed through the surface film. These are, appropriately enough, called propbaits. It is better to tie these lures directly on to the line or trace with an open-looped knot without using snaps or swivels. When fishing with these, and in fact all surface lures, always keep your striking arm in check for a vital second or two. It is very easy to strike instantly in the excitement of the moment and pull the lure straight out of the fish’s mouth. Just like the take of a chub on floating crust, let the pike turn with the bait before setting the hooks. Bear in mind that many lures have hook points that are far too blunt and it will pay to spend time sharpening them before fishing, especially when piking.
Diving Plugs
These are probably the least used, and reserved for those occasions when fishing a water of very variable depth with some deep holes to explore. They can be sub-divided into slow divers, like the Kwikfish, and fast divers like the Hi-Lo, which actually has an adjustable diving vane to vary its rate of descent. With divers, the technique is to count a set number of seconds after the plug hits the water before starting a steady retrieve, altering the delay periodically to vary the retrieve depth. Once at the required depth, increasing retrieve speed will send the lure deeper.
Suspending Plugs
These are interesting to use, the general idea being that they are of neutral buoyancy, and just hang “suspended” in the water when you stop retrieving for a moment. Restarting the retrieve makes them dive. This stop-and-go retrieve technique is effective for all species, but is apparently the most efficient way of lure fishing for zander, which are ultra-suspicious predators. When fishing for zander in this way, some of the takes to suspender plugs are vicious in the extreme and at high speed, so do not have your clutch setting too tight.
As fish see surface lures in silhouette, they often miss at the first attempt because of light refraction. Give them a chance to catch up with the lure and have another go. Anglers often mistakenly feel that the pike has deliberately “come short” at the lure when, in fact, it has genuinely missed its target and ends up just as frustrated as the angler.
How Do I Catch Bass?

If you’ve done any bass fishing, then you’ll already know that it’s not as simple as just putting a line in the water and waiting for them to bite. One of the best things about bass fishing is that it requires skill and patience to be successful. So it’s important to put as many factors in your favor as possible, so that you have the best chance of catching a bass. Let’s take a look at a few tips for successful bass fishing.
As Conditions Change so Should Your Fishing Tactics
The weather matters! In the cooler weather, such as early spring and fall, bass are much more responsive to top water lures. They’re also more likely to be found in shallow water, such as along the shoreline where there are overhanging trees. When it gets hotter, though, bass retreat to deeper, cooler holes, and you need a change of strategy. Basically you need to dredge the bottom, and use something like a plastic worm to get the bass to respond.
Time of day is also important, with dawn and dusk the best times to catch the biggest bass. Look for ambush spots where bass might be lurking in wait for baitfish. They like to pounce on their prey, and these bait fish are most active early morning or evening. This method works best when the water is warmer, above 50 degrees Fahrenheit, because a lot of baitfish aren’t active in cooler temperatures.
Water Quality Matters!
The quality of the water you’re fishing in makes a difference to your bass fishing tactics too. In muddy water, for example, bass use their sonar to locate food. So choose lures that vibrate well and perhaps make some noise. In clear water, though, bass are very cautious and wary of anything unusual. So you need light lines, and lures that closely resemble local food sources. Spinners can work, but you may find a black spinner blade will reduce the flash and be more successful.
In normal water quality, with some algae and plankton to filter out sunlight, most types of lures can be used. It’s often a good idea to set up three outfits, using a different lure for each one, to see which one is working the best. For example, you could use a deep diver on one, a surface lure on the next, and a plastic worm on the third.
What’s the Best Bait?
A large survey of bass fishing enthusiasts found that the plastic worm was considered the most effective lure by a big margin, so when in doubt, try a plastic worm and see what happens. It’s also good to talk to local fishermen if you’re not familiar with the area, and ask them what they recommend. Most bass fishing enthusiasts are happy to find another enthusiast to swap stories with.

Aquaponics can be loosely described as the combination of aquaculture and hydroponics. A natural environment where fish are kept healthy and happy and provide for a chemical free environment, without the use of costly fertilizers and pesticides. Fruiting plants and vegetables take advantage of the nutrients provided by the fish and in return clean the water in a symbiotic relationship.
This system provides healthy fresh food on the weekly menu as well as creating a relaxing hobby from the two most popular pastimes in Australia, gardening and fishing.
Hydroponic systems rely on the careful application of man-made nutrients for the optimum growth of plants. The nutrients are made from mixing together a concoction of chemicals and trace elements to form the ‘perfect’ balance. Water in hydroponic systems needs to be discharged on occasion as the salts and chemicals build up in the water which can become toxic to the plants.
Aquaculture systems focus on maximizing growth of fish in tank or pond culture. The fish are usually heavily stocked in the tanks, often 10kg in 100L of water. The high stocking rates often mean that the tank water becomes polluted with fish effluent which gives off high concentrations of ammonia. Water has to be discharged at a rate of 10-20% of the total volume in the tank on a regular basis. This water is often dumped and may pollute sensitive ecosystems and destroy waterways.
Aquaponics combines both systems and in doing so cancels out the negative aspects of each. Instead of adding harmful chemical solutions to grow plants, aquaponics uses highly nutritious fish waste that contains many nutrients required for optimum growth. Instead of discharging water, aquaponics uses the plants and the media in which they grow to clean and purify the water, after which it is returned to the fish tank. This water can be recirculated and only has to be topped up when it is lost through transpiration and evaporation.
Fish are a key element in all aquaponics systems as they are required to produce feed for the plants. All fish produce waste, the more food that they consume the more effluent they will discharge into the water. Any fresh water fish can be used, such as Barramundi, Rainbow Trout and Silver Perch or even goldfish, however it is important to keep in mind their specific needs and characteristics. Some fish need cool temperatures to thrive and are therefore best suited to winter months or colder areas. Other species prefer warmer temperatures and are best suited to summer months and warmer areas.
Plants are the purifiers in an aquaponic system and therefore are a major element. The plants role is to clean the water for the fish. Plants that are best suited to this are vegetables, fruits and herbs as they consume large amounts of nutrients. Other plants can be used but consideration should be given to whether or not they lay dormant during the year (a period of low growth and low nutrient uptake). Be mindful of plants that have invasive roots such as mint and watercress as they are very hard to remove once they are established. Plants need beneficial bacteria to access the fish effluent.
Beneficial bacteria are what combine aquaculture and hydroponics, without bacteria the system would not function. The bacteria occur naturally in air, water and soil and will begin colonising the system on all surfaces, as soon as ammonia (fish effluent) is present. The process is called the nitrogen cycle and leaves the water clean after the plants have extracted the nitrates.
By working with nature we encourage natural processes that can be monitored and recorded for lessons in schools on integrated science, biology, horticulture, health, society and environmental issues. Aquaponics is ideal for the backyard vegetable patches, schools, universities, restaurants, hotels and almost anything.
Aquaponics systems are gaining popularity and can be used to grow food for personal use or for commercial production. The most popular fish grown in aquaponics systems is tilapia. However, some growers have had success growing largemouth bass, perch, carp, crappies, bream, and some ornamental fish such as Koi and goldfish. The plants that are traditionally grown in these systems are lettuce, other salad greens, and succulent herbs such as basil. Some commercial systems that feature densely stocked fish tanks can grow tomatoes, cucumbers, peppers, and even melons. Both systems are in a controlled environment, meaning light and temperature are controlled. Seven Steps of the Structure Bass Fishing Technique
One bass fishing technique that most bass fishers know about is called the structure technique. However, there is a world of difference between knowing about the technique and being able to use it properly. You can easily read about this technique in books and magazines, but you won’t really get to know it until you put it into practice for yourself. The key to being able to use this structure effectively lies in knowing what to do with it once you know the seven steps involved.
The seven steps of this technique are:
Define. Once you read about structure fishing, then you have to internalize it so that you feel you thoroughly understand what it entails. You need to have a good understanding of the different types of topography that exist under the water and how they apply to bass. For example, it is important to understand the three levels of water – top, middle and bottom – and the various times of the year when you are likely to catch bass in each of these layers. You also should have an understanding of the bass habitat and its feeding patterns. Some of the other factors that you need understanding of are: soil composition, the channels flowing into and out of the lake or river, the water cover, the effects of weather on bass and the available cover for them to hide under.
Research. This involves doing a detailed analysis of the water in the area where you intend to fish. You have to look at the different types of structures. You would not fish a deep lake in the same manner as you would a shallow river.
Locate. This step starts when you get on the lake or river. You should have a depth sounder on your boat and be able to read it so that you know when you have located a school of bass. The reading will also give you a view of the topography of the area.
Define Again. Once you have an area pinpointed where there is a school of bass, you have to note several things about the area. You should record these features in a notebook so that you can refresh your memory when you return to this area or be able to compare them to a different area. What you need to look for are any ledges or areas that drop sharply into deep water, where the deep water locations are, the composition of the bottom and any areas that could be a bass habitat around the shore.
Evaluate. Take your time and study the features to determine the best method for bass fishing in this area. You need to know the exact locations where you are most likely to catch bass, where you should position your boat and the best lures to use.
Exploit. Once you consider all the factors and make your decision, then you can start casting out to catch bass.
Retain. Make a map of the lake in which you record the position of the boat and where you had the most success with bass fishing. This is important if you fish in different locations and will help you from getting them mixed up.

If you are new to choosing bass fishing lures then this article is for you. Choosing the right lure can determine whether or not you get to catch any at the end of the day! These days, bass fishing lures comes in all shapes, sizes and colors but which ones are good enough?
At the end of the day, fishing lures set out to do one thing – to lure. There are designed to mimic a bait fish (or other food source). Therefore when it comes to choosing a good bass lure, realism is the key. To date, lures are made to “sell to the fisherman” rather than how realistic it looks underwater. It is very common for anglers to buy into the hype of various lures out there so do watch out.
Do keep in mind that these are tips and best practices however understand that there is no magic formula when it comes to picking the right lure. What may work brilliantly for you may be the worst lure that another angler has picked. Spend as much time as you can before deciding which is best for you!

3 Bass Fishing Techniques The Pros Don’t Want You To Know About
Bass fishing techniques are wide and varied, and many pro anglers put their own spin on the classics to make them even more deadly. A good angler has an arsenal of techniques, and can quickly examine the fishing conditions and decide which lures to implement for maximum success.
Learning the many different bass fishing techniques will not only make you a better fisherman, it will increase the enjoyment you get from fishing for these feisty sport fish. There are numerous methods that can be extremely effective in landing you the biggest bass you’ve ever caught.
Here are 3 little known bass fishing techniques that the pros have kept to themselves:
1. Top To Bottom (aka “Search and Destroy”)
When employing the “top to bottom” technique, you’ll break the water into 3 depths. Surface to 3 feet below, 3 feet below to 8 feet below, and 8 feet to bottom.
Each depth, or layer, gets fished with a plastic worm until you get a strike. Once you get a strike, you stay with that layer and begin to try new lures and rigs until you find one that is getting lots of action.
You’ll stay in that “layer”, with that rig, until you have no action for 60 minutes. You then repeat the process, finding the “hot layer” once again. This technique is extremely effective. In effect, you’ve become a “human fishfinder”!
2. Going Deep
This technique is all about fishing deep areas that other fishermen seldom touch. It’s fished with a Carolina Rig. A Carolina Rig consists of a heavy weight, followed by a swivel leader and a Texas rigged soft bait.
The fisherman casts into areas where there are rock beds, dock pylons, and other underwater structure, letting the weight sink to the bottom. The rig is retrieved in a slow, twitching fashion.
This gives the appearance of a worm or other bottom feeder slowly inching it’s way along the lake floor. Bass that are hanging low will be attracted to the motion and hit hard.
3. The Floating Spoon
This is a one of the least known, yet most effective bass fishing techniques I have ever had the pleasure of using. The ideal conditions are fairly clear to very clear water and water temperatures below 50 degrees.
The rig consists of a bobber followed by 6-8 feet of line and a lure of choice. Personally, I think big, colorful crankbaits or flashy spoons work best.
When you cast, your lure will sit suspended in the water below your bobber. This is very effective in lower water temperatures because the bass are very slow and lethargic.
You’ll want to use a very slow retrieval and just let your lure cruise along slowly underwater. You won’t have to worry about depth, because the bobber will keep it constant. You’ll be amazed at how many bass you’ll catch with this technique.
Learning a multitude of bass fishing techniques will most definitely produce more bass. More importantly, you need to know which techniques to employ in different conditions. Something that works well in warm, cloudy water won’t be necessarily be as effective as in colder, clear water.

SPOONS are round, flat pieces of metal that look like…well a spoon. These lure parts can be polished to a shine, or colored on both sides. When a spoon is polished, this lure part reflects light and looks like a minnow which is very appetizing to certain bigger fish. There is an eye at one end of the spoon where you can attach a single hook or a 3-pronged hook. At the opposite side of the spoon is the other hole where you attach your Fishing Line, just make sure you tie it up properly. A spoon has a very nice weight to it, which makes this lure part very easy to cast quite far. Its weight also makes the spoon good for trolling and it is easy to retrieve.

The motion of the lure will again depend on the actions of angler. The good thing of having the plastic lure is that it last s longer than that of the typical worm and you can use it over and over again.
Creating your own lures using lure parts is just another way to enjoy fishing. Creating the perfect lure will require some experimenting with different lure parts. The lure you make won’t look as professional as the lure as the store, but it can definitely land you some fish, if not more fish than that store bought lure, and that’s really what it’s all about…catching fish! So pick up some different lure parts and start making your own lures, you can increase your chances of landing a huge catch, and you can save yourself some money too!

Experts suggest that you use a 6-7 weight rod, but if you are especially experienced, you can use a 4-5 weight rod. If you choose the smaller rod, you may have trouble casting the larger flies, so be aware of that. You can use a floating or a sinking line with a weight forward taper. You should have a 7 ½ to 9 foot leader tapered down to a 10 pound test.
Most bass are opportunistic feeders and will bite at anything. In general, however, flies for bass fishing are usually larger and influence a bigger bite. Try big muddler minnows, clousy minnows, wooly buggers, poppers, leech patterns, and crayfish patterns. Size 8 or 10 would be a little on the small side while size 2 or 1/0 would be a little too large, so opt for something in between.
Largemouth bass live in shallow water habitats among reeds, water lilies, and other vegetation naturally found in the water. They are adapted to warm waters in the 80 degree range and are seldom found deeper than twenty feet down. They prefer clear waters with little or no current. They stay fairly active year-round, but tend to stay near the bottom in the winter months.
Great bass fly fishing can be found in various locations throughout the United States. In the northeastern United States, try the rivers and streams in the Adirondack Mountains such as the Mohawk or Black Rivers. There are also some prized bass in the Great Lakes region. Southern Ontario in Canada can also provide some great opportunities to catch trophy sized bass.
Bass fly fishing can be a great experience for both the beginning fly fisherman as well as those with a little more experience. Fly fishing for bass requires a little bit of finesse and some tenacity when they bite. Stay with the fish and pull a whopper out of the water you can be proud of!
